160 years of Indian Railways: Here’s how AC trains were kept cool

You will be surprised to know that ice was used to keep the AC trains cool. A particular system was evolved for the same. The first Indian train started on April 16, 1853 at 3:35 from Bombay to Pune.

The first Indian air-conditioned train was Frontier Mail which was introduced in 1934. Earlier, the AC coaches of the train were kept cool by using ice. British officers used to travel by Frontier Mail. It was a challenge to maintain the temperature of the AC coaches.
