2 goods train derailments Pune-Kolhapur track under scanner

Pune: Inquiry and investigations are underway into the two recent derailments of goods trains between Wathar and Satara stations on Pune-Kolhapur track, said railway officials on Tuesday.

About 16 wagons of a goods train from Sangli to Guwahati derailed on April 22 while four wagons derailed on May 13. Both trains were carrying sugar. “A joint secretary level committee has taken up inquiry to ascertain reasons behind the May 13 accident. The officials have conducted meetings and have taken steps to gather all necessary details required for the investigations,” said officials in the division.

The officials said preliminary inquiry in the first derailment has been completed. It was found that a section of the track was broken when the accident had taken place. The portion of the track has been sent for chemical analysis. The report of the investigation is still awaited, officials said.

Meanwhile, railway administration has taken steps to replace the section of track of about 700 m. Besides some more investigations have also been conducted to check safety of the track. Officials said that prima facie they have not found any lapses in safety aspects. The spots of both accidents are located in hilly regions and a difficult terrain. The accident spots are located about 100 km from Pune.
