Alert train driver averts major accident

MARGAO: A burnt motorcycle maliciously placed on the Konkan railway tracks could have caused a major accident but for an alert driver of a roll-on-roll-off (ro-ro) train. Sources said police do not rule sabotage.

The burnt motorcycle was placed on the tracks near Dicarpale. An accident was averted after the ro-ro train driver spotted the obstacle and stopped the train in the nick of time early Sunday morning. The driver was able to notice the obstacle as the train was moving at a slow speed as it was nearing the Margao station. Konkan Railway police have booked an offense against unknown persons in the case.

Police sources said the train carrying trucks was proceeding from Suratkal to Kolad and the driver spotted the obstacle soon after the train emerged out of a tunnel well past midnight. He immediately applied the brakes and informed the railway officials at Margao railway station.

On being informed, Konkan Railway police and RPF rushed to the site and inspected the tracks. Burnt remains of a motorcycle were recovered from the railway line, meters ahead of the train.

Konkan Railway police have registered a case against unidentified accused under Sections 150-E (maliciously wrecking or attempting to wreck a train) and 151 (damage to or destruction of railway property) of the Indian Railways Act and 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage) of the IPC. Police do not rule out an act of sabotage and are investigating that angle as well, police sources said. A sniffer dog squad was also pressed into service but no valid clues could be obtained, sources said.
