MUMBAI: The Central Railway (CR) has decided to convert all fast train services between CST and Kalyan to 15-car affairs from April 15.
The CR will also introduce 28 new services between Thane and Karjat and between Thane and Kasara from March 28, of which six will be 12-car services and 22 will be shuttle trips.
“As of now, CR runs sixteen 15-car services every day on its fast corridor,” CR chief public relations officer V A Malegaonkar said. “From mid-April, the total number of 15-car services will increase to 26 daily, thus allowing us to run all fast CST-Kalyan and Dadar-Kalyan trains with 15 cars.”
The increase in 15-car services will happen with the introduction of six new services and the upgrade of four 12-car services to 15-car.
But semi-fast locals, which switch to slow after a particular station, are not part of the new deal.
Malegaonkar said the introduction of 28 services on the Thane-Karjat and Thane-Kasara routes will create additional capacity of 77,000 passengers daily.
“Minister of State for Railways Adhir Rajan Chaudhary will flag off the inaugural service on March 26 at 8pm from platform number 7 at CST,” he said.
In the near future, CR also plans to increase its suburban services, which includes the Harbour line, from 1,596 to 1,618 daily.
“Of these, 825 services will be on the main line, up from existing 803 daily,” Malegaonkar said. “The total number of services on Sundays and othr public holidays will also increase from 1,279 to 1,301.”
He said CR would also introduce a new coach formation from April 15 that will group all the ladies compartments at one end of the train to allow effective deployment of security personnel.
