Hosur (HSRA): The long cherished dream of Hosur residents was fulfilled with the introduction of a daily express train between Bangalore and Nagarcoil from Saturday.
The train would help a large number of labourers from southern Tamil Nadu who works in and around Hosur, said M. Thulasi Das, secretary, Hosur Rail Payanikal Membattu Sangam.
Announcement on the introduction of the train was made in the 2013-14 Railway Budget.
Mr. Thulasi Das along with other office-bearers of the association, members of Hosur Small and Tiny Industries Association (HOSTIA) and Federation of Residents’ Welfare Associations, traders’ associations, minorities’ associations arrived at the station to welcome the train. They distributed sweets and garlanded the engine. The next struggle of the associations would be for a train between Hosur and o Jolarpet via Shoolagiri and Krishnagiri. A train service between Hosur and Chennai via Yeshwantpur or Bangalore Cantonment should be introduced.
The other demands were a train between Bangalore and Rameswaram, additional train service to Mayiladuthurai, Viruthachalam, and Inter-city train services to Trichy and Coimbatore.
The Bangalore-Nagercoil Express will depart Bangalore City at 5pm and reach Hosur at 6.08pm. The train will reach Nagercoil at 7.50am the next day. In the return direction the train will leave Nagercoil at 4.25pm and reach Hosur at 6.55am the next day. It will reach Bangalore City at 9.05am.
The new train will halt at Bangalore Cantonment, Hosur, Dharmapuri, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Sattur, Kovilpatti, Tirunelveli, and Valiyur.
The waiting list for Nagercoil-Bangalore Express train for Sunday was 25 and for tatkal the waiting list was 8, railway sources said.
The fares for different classes from Hosur to Nagercoil and vice versa were; Second Class Sleeper Rs. 295; Three Tier AC Sleeper Rs. 800, Two Tier AC Sleeper Rs. 1150 and for General Coach Rs. 165.
The second class train fare of Rs. 295 is far below the fare charged by the private bus operators to Nagercoil from Hosur, which was anything between Rs. 700 and Rs. 1070, said Mr. Thulasi Das. There is no TNSTC bus service to Nagercoil from Hosur.
The fare charged by private buses ranged from Rs. 700 to Rs. 1070. for Non A/C and A/C buses, according to the leading online ticket booking company redbus.in as on Saturday.
The train will have 17 coaches as follows; Air-Conditioned 2-Tier – 1; Air-Conditioned 3-Tier – 2; Sleeper Class – 9; General Second Class – 3 and Second Class (General/Disabled Friendly)-cum-Luggage-cum-Brake Van – 2 railway sources said.
