BEML Ltd, one of the largest railway coach manufacturing PSU under Ministry of Defence (GoI) is awaiting clarity on the indigenization of coaches of the proposed Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train, a top company official has said.
BANGALORE: Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) is waiting clarity on the indigenization of the proposed Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train. Indigenization of coaches comes under the Central government’s ‘Make in India’ program. At initial stage, assemble of the coaches for the bullet train project will be done. At later stage local production will be looked by state-owned company.
BEML Chairman and Managing Director D K Hota said, “We are keen in the indigenization of bullet train coaches. BEML had tied up with Japanese company Hitachi in this regard. There is nothing final yet on the quantum of the indigenization project or total order for the coaches.”
On yesterday he was in the city to sign a MoU with Heavy Engineering Corporation Ltd for cooperation in manufacturing of high-value mining equipment.
He further mentions that total of 240 coaches will be procured for the project and some of them would be assembled in India. “BEML is aiming at 30-per cent rise in the bottomline in the 2018-19 fiscal,” Hota said. Hota further added, “we are well-placed for the project, as we already make rail and metro coaches, the only difference being they (bullet trains) will be have aluminum bodies.”
Bullet train operations are aimed to complete by 2023 between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Japanese investments and technology, and the government will help for this project. Government has already formed National High Speed Railway Corporation to execute the project.
About Mumbai – Ahmedabad Corridor:
In 2009–2010 Rail Budget the Mumbai–Ahmedabad corridor, along with 5 other high-speed rail corridors, was introduced for a feasibility study. With 650 km long high-speed rail corridor, this will run from Pune Railway Station to Ahmedabad Railway Station via Mumbai. At initial it was proposed to have 32 services between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.On 14 February 2013 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Railway and the Societe Nationale des chemins de fer francais (SNCF) in New Delhi.
