Central Railway conducts Surprise Checks to reduce Technical Glitches

Mumbai: A spate of technical faults has spurred the Central Railway to carry out super checks on maintenance and repair work.

The surprise checks will be done for repair and maintenance work of rakes, tracks, signalling and Over Head Equipment (OHE) wires. As of now regular maintenance of tracks is carried out during the weekend mega blocks on both harbour and main lines.

As a result, now motormen have to maintain a daily log recording any discrepancy noticed in the rake. When the rake is brought into service, technical staff have to go through the log and attend to discrepancies if any. The surprise check will ensure that the the technical staff have gone through the log and attended to the problem mentioned.

Railway minister Suresh Prabhu has demanded greater accountability to ensure that the system is safe for passengers.

CR DRM Amitabh Ojha said, “We are going to carry out super checks or surprise checks of the system to ensure that the system is more fool proof. These checks will be carried out by officials from other sections or senior personnel to ensure greater accountability.”

For OHE surprise checks will ensure if adequate clearance has been maintained and parameters adhered to. Similar checks will be done for tracks and signalling.

“Such random surprise checks will definitely keep the staff on toes,” a senior railway official said.
