Chandigarh Citizens wants more than two Metro Rail corridors

Chandigarh (CDG): The Metro in its current form was a joke and should be extended further, feel industrialists, businessmen and local residents of the Tricity.

Sunny Virk, a Zirakpur-based hotelier, said, “When some people say Metro is not viable in Chandigarh, it surprises me. It needs to be expanded enormously and hopefully, it will be in future. If planned well by stretching it to optimum areas to facilitate maximum people, Metro will bring us relief from traffic jams at nodal city points. Later, it will cut short travel time between Chandigarh city centre and areas like Derabassi, Zirakpur, Pinjore, Kharar and Mullanpur.” “We must create infrastructure in time, so there is planned and sustained growth rather than create infrastructure to fix the haphazard growth,” he added.

Ajay Jagga, a city-based advocate, said, “The Metro, as of today, is likely to be suicidal for the city since it is to ply only on two corridors. It will not serve much purpose for the city unless BRTS and local feeder buses, expected to handle the major share of public transport, are put in place.”

Vishnu Goyal, chairman of Haryana Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said, “The project should definitely be expanded in future. We are hoping that after the first two corridors, the second phase will cover more areas. Chandigarh has now gone beyond Tricity. More areas must be covered in a phased manner.”

Dinesh Mishra, a resident of Kharar, who studies in law department in Panjab University (PU), said, “Since the Tricity has expanded much, Metro cannot be limited. The project should be expanded not only to Mohali and Panchkula districts but beyond to help people commute from these places to Chandigarh and back.”
