Chaotic traffic in Walled City likely during Ph-I (B) of Jaipur Metro project

JAIPUR: The Phase-I (B) of the metro rail project is likely to increase traffic woes in the already crowded Walled city area.

As the traffic department has given a nod to install barricades during the soil testing process between Chandpole to Badi Chaupar (2.5km), chaotic traffic conditions are likely to arise in the absence of a proper diversion plan.

A senior official at Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), Continental Engineering Corporation (CEC), a Taiwan-based company, has not yet submitted the traffic plan and it will take at least a month to prepare it.

Sources said in absence of a traffic plan pressure in the narrow lanes of the city will increase.

“It will take six months to start the construction work of underground tunnel. CEC will construct underground Metro stations at Badi and Choti Chaupar,” said an official.

At Choti Chaupar, underground metro station will be constructed in an area of 260m. As per the tentative plan, vehicles coming from Choti Chupar will be diverted towards Chaura Rasta via Tripolia Gate. People visiting Hawa Mahal will have to go through Ghat Gate area.

Similarly, an underground metro station at Badi Chaupar will be built. All the routes will be closed for vehicular traffic during the construction.

Under phase-I (B) of the project, an underground tunnel would be dug from Chandpole to Badi Chaupar through the congested areas of the old city. “It was decided that drilling of the tunnel will be started from the end of Chandpole. At Chandpole end, the depth of the tunnel will be 6m to 16m, while at the Badi Chaupar end, depth will be 10m to 20m,” the official added.
