Vashi वशी (VSH): The chief controller of unauthorized construction (CUC) department of City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) undertook a marathon anti-encroachment drive at the Vashi railway station premises on Thursday. A demolition team of 12 from the department and 30 security personnel swooped down on the station premises from noon to clear the forecourt area that has a large number of eateries. Six truckloads of chairs and tables were seized during the drive that lasted five-and-a-half-hours.
“I directed the demolition team to undertake a surprise check at the Vashi railway station commercial complex (VRSCCL) and the forecourt area. Often, news about the previous drives got leaked and the hawkers would remove their kiosks only to return later. We had complaints from several people and the company that had asked us to take action. The VRSCCL had earlier served notices to the encroachers too,” said CIDCO chief controller of unauthorised construction department, Anil Patil.
The demolition team had cleared nine to 10 kiosks in the station premises and another 10-12 eateries in the forecourt area. “We will keep visiting the site for further inspections,” said Manoharan Menon, OSD to the chief controller.
CIDCO has been criticized for being slow to take action on encroachments. The current VRSCCL chairman, Rajendra Pawar, had meetings with the CIDCO MD Sanjay Bhatia and had announced that the new committee would ensure a clean and encroachment-free premises to the station.
