The Communist Party of India (CPI) of Bheemunipatnam and Anakapalle have been merged with the CPI Greater Visakhapatnam City Council and J.V.Prabhakar has been elected its secretary at a recent meeting of the party’s state council, according to CPI district Council secretary J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy. Mr.Prabhakar, Regional Deputy Director (Employment and Training), has taken voluntary retirement from service to serve the party. A native of Peda Gummuluru village of S.Rayavaram mandal in the district, he served as state president of the AP Gazetted Officers Association. He bagged the ‘best officer’ award from the government in 1998. Mr.Prabhakar is also presently running an eye hospital at Ramabhadrapuram in Vizianagaram district and through it free medicines were distributed to 2 lakh people and free cataract surgeries were performed on 5,000 patients.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Prabhakar said that Greater Visakhapatnam, with around 20 lakh population, constitutes about half of the population of the district. Unfortunately, 44 per cent of the people in the city were poor. The other major problems include: the highest pollution in the state and neglect of IT sector. There was a need to de-link Waltair Division from East Coast Railway and form a separate railway zone with Visakhapatnam as headquarters. Replying to a query, Mr. Satyanarayana Murthy, who is also convener of the Railway Zone Saadhana Samithi, said that formation of a new zone with Visakhapatnam as headquarters has assumed greater significance in view of the proposed bifurcation of the state. He also urged that Vizag need Metro Railway system to meet future demands as well connecting Port, Steel Plant, IT-SEZ, Duwwada, Industrial Zones, DRDO establishments, Navy, Petroleum zones and Civil areas such that the transportation can become easier in a fast growing city like Vizag.
