DMRC concerned over labour unrest on Kochi Metro stretch

Kochi:  The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s head office is expected to take a call soon on the labour unrest in Kochi Metro’s fourth reach — between Ernakulam South and Pettah — following non-payment of dues to contract workers for the past two months.

DMRC sources said that mobilisation advance was not given to Era Constructions since the firm did not produce a bank guarantee. The firm is reportedly working on the issue, so that workers can be paid their dues.

DMRC might be forced to initiate action if work suffers delays due to non-payment of dues and subsequent labour unrest, since delay in carrying out works cannot be condoned, metro sources said.

Land given to Metro

In the meantime, Maharaja’s College handed over documents for 16.4 cents of land in its ground near MG Road to Kochi Metro Rail Ltd for the metro’s Maharaja’s College station on Friday.

This followed a meeting of KMRL officials with the college Principal, students and union representatives.

The present proposal excludes land in the hockey ground. Neither will trees be cut, says a KMRL press release.
