How Indian Railways’ GPS-based Fog Safety device works?
Indian Railways has initiated installation of fog safety devices in northern trains in order to avoid delay and cancellation of trains owing to zero visibility in dense winter fog.
The device, a GPS-based Loco Pilot Assistance System, will be placed in the driver’s cabin.
The fog safety device alerts the driver of the approaching signal, level crossing gate as well as neutral section on the track during fog.
The visual and voice alerts provided in the system ensures that the alert will be noticed or heard by the driver well before the approaching signals or level crossings.
The device will also help increase the speed of trains.
The Fog safety device will also display the distance of the upcoming next two landmarks alongwith the details of upcoming three locations.
The device has a in-built data logging facility to store more than 100,00 location data as well as to log all the events that have occured in the last 40 hours.
The alarm in the device will be activated before the arrival of the location whose GPS co-ordinates are fed into its database.
Alarm decisons will be taken by the unitas and when it falls within the geo-fence (pre-warning distance.
The fog safety devices have been provided to drivers of all the trains including Mail/Express/ Passenger/ EMU/ DEMU as well as goods trains working over Delhi.
A Northern Railway official said, “We have used GPS technology in the device with a map of tracks, signals, stations & level crossing of Northern Railway in it. It alerts loco pilot about level crossing/signal.”
The official further added, “The device alerts loco pilot about level crossings and signal. When drivers know there are no hurdles, they can increase speed.”
SWISS Federal Railways (SBB) and Stadler testing a New Digital Train Driver Assistance System on the High Speed lines
SWISS Federal Railways (SBB) and Stadler have been testing a new digital train driver assistance system on the Bern – Olten high-speed line and, for the first time in Switzerland, a double-deck train has been automatically braked and accelerated with the train driver in attendance.
The new driver assistance system is based on ETCS Level 2, which is installed on the Bern – Olten line, as well as a system developed by SBB for energy-efficient driving called Adaptive Steering (ADL) whereby the train follows a predetermined programme designed to reduce energy consumption.
SBB says the technology for further automation of train operation must be designed to operate across borders and be standardised for freight and passenger trains. Accordingly, Swiss railways are in contact with the European rail industry to achieve this.
However, SBB made it clear that it has no plans to operate fully automatically with driverless trains. SBB’s CEO Mr Andreas Meyer believes drivers are still needed, and in any case he cannot imagine that passengers will feel comfortable without one.
“Job profiles are changing, but employees’ knowledge remains a key to targeting and using the new technology,” SBB says. “SBB is continuing to develop these new competences in dialogue with its train drivers.”
The project is part of the Swiss SmartRail 4.0 programme, in which BLS, Southeastern Railway (SOB), Rhaetian Railway (RhB), the Swiss Public Transport Association and SBB are pushing ahead with the digitisation and automation of timetabling, operation and train control. The objective is to cut costs, improve punctuality, provide more capacity and introduce new services.
