ECR develops 55 model stations

PATNA: The East Central Railway (ECR) has developed about 55 model stations and 50 others as modern stations in all its five divisions with an aim to give a further facelift to railway stations.

According to ECR CPRO Amitabh Prabhakar, railways has developed both model and modern stations in Danapur, Dhanbad, Mughalsarai, Sonepur and Samastipur divisions to cater to the needs of passengers and with proper cleanliness on platforms.

Railways has identified about 528 stations in 16 zones for giving them a facelift under model and modern station scheme. While the number of model stations at the country level is to be 271, there are about 257 stations to be developed as modern stations. In fact, the railway board has selected five stations from each division to give the required facelift, sources said, adding that about 125 such stations would be under the ECR.

According to sources, safety and security system would be strengthened more under these two categories. While restrooms, retiring rooms, refreshment halls and cloak rooms are being developed under the model category, the modern stations will have the state of the art waiting rooms, signage, improved cleanliness and other amenities for passengers, sources said.

The proposed security system would effectively deal with any eventuality like terror or Maoist attacks on railway stations, sources said.

According to sources, there are about 7,000 stations across the country to be developed under these two categories to cater to the passengers’ needs. Railways has already started the work on these selected stations so that they could be developed within the stipulated timeframe, sources said.
