Elephants disrupt train services in Hazaribag

Hazaribagh Road (HZD): Movement of goods train came to a halt and express trains slowed down when the railway gateman of Khiruddin station in Chakulsa block of the district noticed a herd of 17 elephants, including two calves on the track, on the Dhanbad-Koderma section of the Grand Chord line on Wednesday night.

Many super fast express and goods train pass through the route at night. On seeing the tuskers, the panicky gateman rushed to station master Avijit Patro who immediately informed the central control room at Dhanbad. The CCR took instant measures and stopped the trains at the preceding stations or ordered slowing down of its speed in order to prevent railway accident and elephants’ killing, said P Thanga Pandiyan, divisional forest officer of Hazaribag West Division.

The herd which created havoc in the Churchu, Daroo, Tati-Jharia, Ichak,Barkatha and Chalkusha Blocks of Hazaribag district for the last six weeks, damaging standing crops including harvested paddy worth several lakhs of rupees, have finally shifted to their origin in Dumka, the DFO said. He said they have entered into Giridih district crossing the Barakar river in the Chalkusha block of district. He admitted that the wild tuskers have caused huge damages to the crops and houses of the villagers and suitable compensation are being paid to the villagers who incurred losses.
