European Railway to face Al Qaeda threat – large scale concurrent attacks planned

Atentado-en-MadridGerman newspaper Bild reported on Monday that Al Qaeda plans to carry out terrorist assaults on the high-speed railway in Europe. Bild cited intelligence sources in the story.

According to Bild, potential attacks could involve heavy to high scale bombings on moving high-speed trains and in tunnels, as well as tampering with electric cables and train tracks.  The attacks could involve bombing of the high speed track bridges.  Reports also mentioned that the terrorists are from 5 to 6 Islamic nations mostly from Pakistan, Sudan, Afghanistan, Syria and Egypt.  It is reported that the plan to attack the high-speed trains will be simultaneous at a time.

Bild’s intelligence sources were from the U.S.National Security Agency (N.S.A.), which reportedly infiltrated an Al Qaeda conference call in which the European railway was discussed.

German security forces have stationed discrete police officers at various train stations in response to the information, reported Bild.

The train scare comes after American intelligence services intercepted communication between Al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri and more than 20 other Al Qaeda members, causing the U.S. and other Western nations to temporarily shutter their embassies in the region.

All the nations in Europe were put on high alert – says report.
