Chandigarh (CGH): The foggy weather conditions that wrapped most parts of the northern region on Monday affected railway traffic at the city, delaying more than six trains by 1 to 11 hours.
According to the railways, Allahabad-Chandigarh Express was delayed by 11 hours, while Bombay-Kalka Express, Kochuveli-Chandigarh Express, Patliputra-Chandigarh Express and Chandigarh-Lucknow Express were 2 hours late. Chandigarh-Lucknow Sadbhawna Express was delayed by 1.45 hours. That’s not all.
The New Delhi-Kalka Shatabdi was delayed by 1 hour and reached the city railway station at 12:10 pm. Another Shatabdi train to Chandigarh from Delhi, scheduled to reach here at 8:35 pm, was delayed by 10 minutes.
‘Fog played havoc. The railway traffic of not only our division but that of others too was disturbed,’ said Gulshan Kumar, senior divisional commissioner manager, Ambala railways division.
A majority of people rushing to the railway station to pick up their friends and relatives stayed put for hours, while a few made multiple trips.
‘My relatives were travelling in the Allahabad-Chandigarh Express. I reached the station around 9:30am but the train was delayed by 11 hours. I had to come to the station thrice to check its arrival. The train finally reached in the night,’ said Sumer Singh, a resident of Sector 56.
Sources said the delays were likely to become a norm in the coming days.
‘We have to take additional precautionary measures while running the trains during this period. A meeting in this regard was recently held, where directions to repaint marks indicating kilometers on tracks and additional checking of tracks was given to all officials and employees,’ said an official of Chandigarh railways station.
