नयी दिल्ली New Delhi: The Government has earmarked Rs 19,000 crore for renewal of railway tracks to ensure that the tracks are in good conditions for safe running of trains.
Railway Minister DV Sadananda Gowda told Lok Sabha that track renewal is a continuous activity which is to be undertaken as and when a stretch of track becomes due for renewal, taking into account the traffic carried over the track, incidence of rail fractures, failures, wear and age.
“Safety is one of the priority sectors of Railways. Track renewal will continue and it will not stop,” he said during Question Hour.
Gowda said track renewal works are sanctioned every year and their execution is prioritised according to condition of track and overall availability of funds ensuring that all the time track is in a sound condition for safe running of trains.
About drinking water at railway stations and trains, the Minister said current production of Rail Neer bottles which is about 3.8 lakh is not enough and the remaining requirement is met by purchasing from the market.
Railways needs about 25 lakh litres of water per day, he said. To a separate query on ensuring safety of women passengers, the Minister said the government is giving importance to the matter.
Safety of women passengers is a concern and the government is taking much care in this regard. There are plans to install CCTVs in ladies coaches and about 4,000 women constables are being recruited, Gowda said.
