GPT Infraprojects JV wins Rs.90 Crore contract from IRCON related to Kiul-Gaya Rail line in Danapur Division

KOLKATA/DANAPUR: GPT Infraprojects today said it has won a Rs 90.5 crore contract in a joint venture from IRCON International for works related to Kiul-Gaya railway line. “The company has bagged an order valued at Rs 90.5 crore in joint venture with Hari Construction, where GPT’s share is 51 per cent,” the company said in a filing to the BSE.

It said the contract from IRCON International pertains to earthwork and miscellaneous works in connection with doubling of railway line between Kiul-Gaya. The project is scheduled to be completed in 18 months. GPT Infraprojects is the flagship firm of GTP Group, an infrastructure company based in Kolkata.


The Kiul-Gaya section falls in Danapur Division of East Central Railway. The Gaya–Kiul line is a railway line connecting Gaya on the Howrah-Gaya-Delhi line and Kiul on the Howrah-Delhi main line both in the Indian state of Bihar. At present traffic utilization of the section is 135.5%. Since the existing section capacity is almost fully utilized and to cater to the continuously increasing freight traffic, the work of Kiul-Gaya doubling project is essentially required. The project will serve the freight traffic for Super Thermal Power Plant at Barh which is likely to be completed shortly. Daily requirement of Coal for this plant will be 18 rakes of coal and 14 pairs of goods trains are likely to move on this section. Average number of trains handled on the section per day is 13 trains each way. This includes 11 pairs of Passenger Trains and 2 pairs of goods trains. Five pairs of Mail/Express is expected to be augmented after commissioning of the Koderma-Tilayia section.

Several years before the Grand Chord was built, a connection from the Howrah-Delhi main line to Gaya was developed in 1900 and the South Bihar Railway Company (operated by EIR) had laid a line from Lakhisarai to Gaya in 1879. The Grand Chord was opened on 6 December 1906. In 1952, Eastern Railway, Northern Railway and North Eastern Railway were formed. Eastern Railway was formed with a portion of East Indian Railway Company, east of Mughalsarai and Bengal Nagpur Railway. Northern Railway was formed with a portion of East Indian Railway Company west of Mughalsarai, Jodhpur Railway, Bikaner Railway and Eastern Punjab Railway. North Eastern Railway was formed with Oudh and Tirhut Railway, Assam Railway and a portion of Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway. East Central Railway was created in 1996-97

Track doubling of the 130 kilometres (81 mi) long Gaya-Kiul line was announced in the Railway Budget for 2010-2011.

In 2016, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given its approval for doubling of Kiul-Gaya Railway line of 124 km with a completion cost of Rs.1354.22 crore. Doubling of this line will greatly ease the ever increasing freight traffic between these sections. Lakhisarai, Sheikhpura, Nawadah and Gaya districts of Bihar will be benefited through this project.

Feasibility studies for the electrification of the Manpur-Tilaiya-Kiul sector were announced in the rail budget for 2010-11 and the electrification work of single track is going on starting 2015-16.
