MEERUT/AGRA: An inspector posted at Government Railway Police (GRP)’s Special Operation Group (SOG) has been arrested by Saharanpur police for his role in a loot that took place in Saharanpur in early hours of Monday. In the sensational robbery, six criminals, three of them in police uniform, took away Rs 8.34 lakh from a wheat trader and threatened him.

Inspector Lalit Kumar Tyagi, who hails from Karaunda Chaudhar of Bijnor district, was formerly SHO of Agra Fort, Agra Cantt and Raja Ki Mandi GRP stations. He is currently heading the emergency control room of GRP’s Agra division as well as its zeharkhurani cell. The other two in police uniform have been identified as GRP constables, Rinku Singh and Shayar Beg, posted in surveillance cell of GRP Agra division, who are both on the run.

On Tuesday evening, Saharanpur police brought inspector Tyagi along with two accomplices, Bashir Khan and Subhash Sharma, to Saharanpur. Cops recovered Rs 4.94 lakh from them while the rest of the amount is with the two absconding cops and one Chotu who drove the vehicle used in the crime.

Saharanpur SSP Dinesh Kumar P said, “In the early hours of Monday, six men, three of them in police uniform, robbed wheat trader Mohd Akhtar at his house in village Umahi under Nangal police station of Saharanpur. They took away Rs 8.34 lakh and even tried to abduct Akhtar but he somehow jumped out of the vehicle and shouted for help. When people started gathering, the attackers fled in an un-numbered vehicle.”

In police complaint, Akhtar named Bashir Khan as the main person behind the heist. “During investigation, it came to light that Khan was a man of criminal antecedents and he instigated Agra-based cops to participate in the loot. We constituted several teams to investigate the matter,” the SSP said.

According to SP (rural) Vidya Sagar Mishra, who headed the surveillance team, “The three cops in uniform were spotted in a CCTV footage of toll plaza in Muzaffarnagar district. The trail eventually led us to Agra.”

According to sources at GRP Agra division, “Inspector Tyagi was picked up by Saharanpur police from Raja Ki Mandi of Lohamandi police jurisdiction on Monday night around 11 pm. He was caught after surveillance team of Saharanpur police tracked a mobile phone number which belonged to the accused cop.”

Senior superintendent of police, GRP’s Agra division, Abhishek Yadav said, “The three cops were on duty as the police records show; but, they left for Saharanpur without informing anyone, along with their service weapons. A preliminary inquiry is being conducted under CO, GRP Agra, and soon the departmental inquiry, too, would be setup. Meanwhile, all the three cops have been suspended. GRP Agra division will fully cooperate with Saharanpur police in the arrest the two absconding constables.”
