पेरम्बूर Perambur (PER): Ahead of the 2015 railway budget, the Integral Coach Factory has asked the Railway Ministry for budgetary allocation to set up another unit to produce 300 high-speed stainless steel LHB coaches at its factory in Perambur.
Currently ICF produces around 300 such coaches in a year. The new facility would require around Rs 700 crore, sources in ICF said. ICF already has the required land and the allocation would be needed for machinery, construction and manpower. The stainless steel coaches are used in Shatabdi and Rajdhani trains. An LHB coach has more seats than a normal ICF coach, while its lighter weight also enables the train to move at a higher speed.
ICF sources also told Express that manufacture of air-conditioned suburban coaches, a proposal for the deployment of which is with Southern Railway, wouldn’t need budgetary allocation.
