Increased movement of containers by road hits rail movement at Chennai Port

Chennai (MAS): Atulya Misra, Chairman of Chennai Port Trust said, with the rise in movement of containers by road, transportation of cargo by rail at Chennai Port has declined by nearly 20% in the last five years.

Speaking at a session on ‘Business Opportunities with Southern Railways’, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII),  Misra said that while 33% of the cargo handled at the Port was moved by rail five years ago, it had nosedived to just 13% now.

However, he added that the Port could increase its cargo traffic through rail to nearly 30% once the Railways implements its plan to construct the third and fourth rail lines passing through the gateway facility.
