Under “Digital India” initiative, provision of Wi-Fi facility at important Railway stations had been announced in Railway Budget 2016. Railway Board has entrusted this work to RailTel for provision of Wi-Fi at 400 stations across India in collaboration with Google. Google has expressed interest in this project during Hon’ble Prime Minister’s visit to Google Headquarter at Mountain View, California. Wi-Fi services at Railway stations are being provided through “RailWire” the retail broadband distribution model of RailTel. RailTel is providing high speed end to end network connectivity on optical Fiber cable & Google is providing Radio access network equipment along with technology support.
In the first phase, 100 busiest Railway stations of the country were planned to be provided with Wi-Fi by March 2017. Upto Feb 2017, free Wi-Fi has now been provided at 115 Railway stations which is estimated to benefit 50 Lakh passengers daily.
A Press release on South Western Railway (SWR) stated that 4 stations (Bengaluru, Yesvantpur, Mysuru & Hubballi in SWR) have been provided with this facility so far. A total of 210 access points have been installed at these 4 stations to provide high speed Wi-Fi to passengers.

Each access point covers 25 to 40 Mtrs. All platforms & entry area are covered within station limits. The maximum Bandwidth allotted to each station is 1 GB.
In Karnataka, Wi-Fi has also been provided at Mangalore Central & Gulbarga for the convenience of passengers at these stations.
In Belgavi Railway station the facility is provided through MPLADS by BSNL.
Railway stations are frequented by people from all segments of society. This innovative initiative towards “Digital India” will provide high speed access net work to all rail users and will be extremely beneficial in bridging digital divide. Passengers waiting for their trains can remain connected and carry out their work in a seamless manner.
In addition to the Wi-Fi provided at above stations, it is planned to provide the same at the following important stations by the end of the financial year 2017-18

RailTel Wi-Fi is available to everyone with working mobile connection on a smart phone.
Steps to connect to Wi-Fi at Stations.
Internet access with a speed of upto 1 Mbps (upload) & 3 Mbps (download) is provided free to the users for the first 30 mts in a day and subsequently speed reduces to 64 Kbps. However, access to Railway related sites through Wi-Fi for information like PNR and Train enquiry will be free for the entire duration.
