Indian Railways to give Promotions to over Three Lakh Group-C Employees

NEW DELHI: The Indian Railways has started the process of promoting its ‘Group C’ employees to the category of ‘Group B’ officers. The Railway Board has set up a high level committee to promote Group B officials by promoting the employees. After one month, the recommendations of the committee will be implemented and the employees of Group C will be appointed as permanent officers in this cadre.

As per sources, according to the Seventh Pay Commission, 4600 Grade Pay employees will be promoted from Group C to Group B status. This rule was already implemented in the Central Government and State Government. But in the Railways, it had not been implemented till date. 4200 Grade Pay employees had been given Group B status from many state governments. It is after employees mounted pressure, that the Railway Board constituted a committee of high level officials on June 12 to make the employees as Group B officers. The committee will submit its recommendations next month.

After this, the Group C employees of cadre, civil, mechanical, electrical, telecom etc. will be given Group B status. A senior official of the Ministry of Railways said that employees will benefit from the recommendations of the committee. The technical staff is about nine thousand and non-technical staff is more than four lakh. Going this way, at least 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh people will be receiving the benefit. The official said that further Group B gazetted and Group B non-gazetted can be designated according to grade pay of Group C employees. After this, Group C employees of cadre, civil, mechanical, electrical, telecom etc. will be given Group B status.

After becoming a Group B Officer, the grade of personnel will be Rs.4800. In addition to the special passes of the Railways, officer clubs etc., bungalows of class-forest officers, servants, vehicles etc. will be provided by the Railways.
