CHENNAI: Recently ICF has received the prestigious 5S Methodology Certificate for the best ‘Workplace Organization’ issued by Indian Register Quality Systems (A division of IRCLASS systems and Solutions Pvt. Ltd.) on 19.04.2018. This Certificate is valid for three years during which one certification audit and 2 surveillance audit would be conducted at an interval of one year to check on sustained actions by the recipient organization for continued validity of certification.
5S denotes ‘Workplace Management System’ and is a tool with Japanese roots, focused on fostering and sustaining high quality housekeeping. 5S viz. SEIRI, SEITON, SEISO, SEIKETSU & SHITSUKE in Japanese, which are translated as ‘Sorting, Arranging, Cleaning, Standardization and Discipline’, is the beginning of a productive life for everyone and is fundamental to productivity improvement.
It is a time tested and proven approach (in fact, a stepping stone) to achieve World Class status. The physical environment determines ones behaviour. On the other hand, a similar behavioural pattern among group of people defines culture. Thus, there is a strong link between culture and physical environment. Extrapolating, one can also find a strong link between the physical environment at the workplace and productivity. A 5S driven workplace enhances productivity and competitiveness and fosters a productivity culture through a continual process of identifying, reducing and eliminating waste. The 5S concept is easy for everyone to understand, it does not require understanding of difficult terminologies. It is simple, driven by logic and natural to human behaviour. 5S is within the reach of any private and public organisation of any size. It can be practiced by any company in any type of business: manufacturing, commercial organizations, offices, service organization, educational institutions etc.
This will augur the efforts of ICF towards its goal of perfection in every arena of its activity, be it manufacturing of railway passenger coaches, Staff Welfare, Work Culture, or Discipline by Standardizing the work practices. It is pertinent to mention here that ICF has already received ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management System, ISO 14001:2015 for Environment Management System, BS OHSAS 18001:2007 for occupational health and safety management systems, ISO 50001:2011 for Energy Management System, ISO 3834-2:2005 for Quality Management System for Welding, BEE 5 Star Rating for ICF administrative Building, IGBC Platinum Rating for ICF administrative Building, GreenCo Rating, NABL ISO/IEC 17025:2005 for Chemical & Metallurgical Laboratory.
