Mumbai : Thane and Dadar stations will get escalators before the monsoon, said Central Railway (CR) officials. The deadline was shifted thrice; first it was mid-January, then it was mid-March and finally mid-May.
A CR official said, “The problem we were facing was that when the proposal had been made, we had not taken into consideration the cost of the pillars upon which the escalator would be mounted.”
The CR plans to install 26 escalators at seven stations this year. Dadar and Thane have been chosen as the first stations because they are the busiest stations. Asked if the escalators would be able to take the slush of the rainy season, the official said extra care and maintenance staff would take care of it. However, there will be no attendants as at malls.
Where they will be installed?
The 28 escalators on the CR will be installed at:
Dadar : 6
Thane : 6
Kalyan : 4
Lokmanya Tilak Terminus : 4
Lonavala : 4
Ghatkopar : 2
Dombivli : 2
According to a recent survey by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), Thane sees 6.54 lakh passengers daily. The survey also found 1,000 trains pass through Thane, which has 10 platforms. It also has a corridor to Panvel. Nearly 60 outstation trains halt at Thane. Escalators have been functioning in Metro stations at Kolkata and Delhi. The Western Railways also has plans to install escalators at Dadar, Andheri and Borivli by June end. The batch will come up at Bandra terminus, Lower Parel, Mira Road, Bhayander, Nallasopara and Virar later this year.
