Mumbai: Committee formed to finalise and analyse options to have a car depot for underground Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ metro rail is yet to submit its report. At the moment, options are being weighed if the depot should be at Aarey Milk Colony or at Kanjurmarg.
Sources privy to the development said that Kanjurmarg and Aarey are being looked at. The committee has prepared a revised plan for Aarey Milk Colony, wherein a couple of hundred less trees will be hacked but the car depot will come over an existing road.
The original plan for having the car depot at Aarey Milk Colony is by way of clearing 2,298 trees, of which 254 trees are to be axed and balance 2,044 trees are to be transplanted.
The other option is to extend the alignment right up to Kanjurmarg, that is at the extreme end of Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road where it meets the Eastern Express Highway. Here there are four open plots next to the link road. These four open plots can be used as a car depot.
“For Jogeshwari-Kanjurmarg metro rail, one of these four plots has been identified for car depot. Therefore, car depot of both the corridors may be planned,” said a source.
Post construction, the challenge will be introducing or withdrawing metro trains from the depot to Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ alignment without affecting Jogeshwari-Kanjurmarg passenger services.
However, the report is unlikely to recommend any one spot out of the seven locations — Aarey Milk Colony, Kanjurmarg, University of Mumbai Campus at Kalina, Dharavi, Mumbai Port Trust land at
Wadala, Mahalaxmi Race Course and Backbay Reclamation. A final call on the subject will be left for chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.
“We will soon submit the report. It is likely next week or in a fortnight,” said UPS Madan, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, who is also part of the committee.
