Katra Rail link likely to face more delay

Katra: Clouds of uncertainty continue to hover over the opening of much awaited Udhampur-Katra rail track with Northern Railway authorities  are yet to receive formal clearance for making it operational.

“Only after getting green signal from the Commissioner Railway Safety (CRS), direct train to Katra, the base camp for the Vaishno Devi Shrine in Reasi, will become  a reality”,   Divisional Railway Manager, Firozpur Division, N.C.Goyal, told  media persons here after conducting final inspection of the track  .

Accompanied by senior officers of the railways, Goyal said that the railway track was complete in all respects and  would be thrown open for the traffic soon after getting clearance from the CRS.

“All works on Udhampur-Katra Railway track have been completed and we have  already conducted successful trials run but we need CRS approval to ply the trains from Katra which is mandatory for all new tracks”, Goyal said.

He further informed that the Northern Railways has  approached CRS for issuance of a formal certificate for final clearance “and hopefully it will be issued soon “.

Pertinently on December 4, as a trial run, the Railways authorities had successfully run a Light Power Engine from Udhampur to Katra and back, rekindling hopes that the track may soon be opened for regular railway traffic.
