Tiruvananthapuram: Kerala Monorail Corporation is planning to commence construction work for the Kozhikode monorail project by February 2014.
Land acquisition process for the project is underway. The developer will commence work on the overbridge at Panniyankara, which is part of the monorail work in December 2013. Tendering process for the same is expected to be completed by the end of October 2013.
The estimated cost is Rs.1991 crore and the project will be developed in two phases. Phase-I will be from Medical College to Mananchira and Phase-II will be from Mananchira to Meenchanda.
So far, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, a consultant for the project, has completed all the groundwork ahead of commencement of the project. The corporation has provided the draft agreement to the Road Fund Board to rule out any time delay. DMRC has also engaged a surveyor and has prepared detailed plans for land acquisition procedures for the 10.65 ha required for the project.
Once completed, the monorail will have 15 stops along the 14.2 km stretch from Medical College to Meenchanda. The entire alignment of the monorail is elevated, carried on single pillars generally along the median of the road. Each pillar will take up around two mtr on the median.
