कोलकत्ता Kolkata (KOAA): The 59th Railway Week 2014 was celebrated by Metro Railway, Kolkata this afternoon at Rotary Sadan. Addressing a large gathering of staff, officers and their family members, Rajeev Bhargava, General Manager said that with the sincere and dedicated effort of Metro staff and officers, Metro Railway achieved the unprecedented success in the year 2013-14.
Metro Railway has carried 19.53 crore passengers which is 3.69% higher in comparison to last year’s 18.83 crore and the punctuality & reliability have also made a mark with 99.66% during the year.
On the safety front a very bold step has been taken as each coach of Metro Railway has been provided with fire extinguishers. The TPWS (Train Protection Warning System) has already been commissioned in all 13 AC rakes. Recently, Cab radios have been commissioned in all the 13 AC rakes. The motormen and Shunters have been provided with GSMR SIM and Airtel SIM to enable them to keep close liaison among themselves for better operation of the Metro system.
Bhargava also informed that Metro Railway has plans to provide lift at 4 Metro stations i.e. Dum Dum, Shyam Bazar, Esplanade & Mahanayak Uttam Kumar to extend benefit to physically challenged people in particular and others in general. 5 stations have been taken for provision of escalator and these stations are Belgachia, Maidan, Jatin Das Park, Kalighat and Rabindra Sarobar. On this occasion, the General Manager honoured the selected band of sincere and dedicated Staff & officers who have rendered their meritorious services to the Railways.
He also distributed cash award, medals and certificates of merits to the employees of Metro Railway for their devotion to duty and services.
115 individual awards and 124 Group Awards were distributed by the General Manager on this occasion. Kalighat Metro station was given the Best Maintained Station in the Metro system.
