Locals oppose Washery, Siding constructions in the vicinity of Residential Areas in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar (BBS):  A delegation of the Akaltara Bachao Andolan Samiti called on Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) and other senior officials and handed over a memorandum while urging them to stop the ongoing construction work of Coal Washery of ACB India near the Railway level crossing here forthwith.

Besides this, the delegation also opposed the proposed coal siding of Mahavir Coal Washery in the exchange yard land of the Cement Corporation of India in ward number 19. According to it, both the sites were in the middle of a densely populated area in the city and close to a school and drinking water facility of the city residents. A high tension wire was also above the proposed sites, it observed.

They also feared if the Washery and siding were permitted to come up in the current sites it would also cause immense environmental pollution and would have adverse impact on the lives of the local people. Quoting from the Chhattisgarh Gazette 2009 they said storage of coal within 300 metres of a populated area and under high tension wire was prohibited on the health grounds.

The delegation alleged that some of the officers allowed the construction of these sites contrary to the laid down regulation despite local residents protest a successful post card drive. But still, the authorities were yet to respond to their demands positively, he said.

The DRM and senior Environment officers, according to the delegates assured them to look into their demands and promised to visit the sites. The delegation included Arun Rana, Md Imran Khan, Sudhir Sisodia, Sanjay Kedia and other local residents.
