The first two of seven locomotives destined for Phase one of the UAE National Rail Project arrived on April 10th at Mussafah Port.
The SD70ACS locomotives are designed by US company Electro-Motive Diesel to work in the testing conditions found in the Gulf, and have already proven highly successful in other parts of the world. In keeping with Etihad Rail’s commitment to deliver efficient, environmentally friendly transport options, the locomotives feature the very latest technologies. The locomotives contain the engines for the trains and will be moved to Etihad’s site at Mirfa in preparation for the launch of Phase One of the project.
H.E. Dr. Nasser Al Mansoori, CEO of Etihad Rail confirmed that Phase One of the project, developed in partnership with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), was on schedule to commence operations by the end of the year. Trains will run from Habshan to Ruwais carrying granulated sulphur.
When completed, the UAE National Railway Network will connect up remote communities and bring opportunities for social and economic growth to the area. The Network will form part of the GCC Railway Network linking the UAE to Saudi Arabia via Ghweifat in the west and Oman via Al Ain in the east.
