Bhagalpur (BGP): The railways, in the backdrop of traffic congestion and insufficient area for handling and storage of commodities being transported through goods trains, has decided to put up a huge yard and sheds on a railway land near Tekani railway station on Bhagalpur-Mandar Hill- Banka railway section under Malda division of Eastern Railway. The objective behind establishment of a new railway yard and goods sheds is to facilitate better trade and commerce in the region.
The new will replace the one at Bhagalpur railway station, which will cost the railways Rs.12 crore, sources said, adding work will start at the end of May 2015 and will complete by March 2017.
Railway sources said the establishment of the yard will also have an added advantage of revenue generation for the railways since the Bhagalpur-Mandar Hill-Banka branch lines have become operational. The railway section, which is being extended to Dumka (Jharkhand), has not been generating much revenue due to limited train services on the route since operation commenced.
Sources said the yard might also be used as an additional coal shed, apart from one at Pirpainty, as most of the coal mining areas (ECL etc) fall in adjoining state of Jharkhand. Supply of coal for the power generating stations of NTPC Ltd at Farakka and Kahalgaon are made from ECL at Lalmatia (Jharkhand) and other coal mines through coal shed at Pirpainty at present. The yard will also set off the activities for the establishment of many ancillary units by private entrepreneurs, said Malda DRM Rajesh Argal.
