Patna: Indian Railways, which has outsourced mechanized cleaning work to private agencies, has introduced the cleaning system at 12 stations falling under East Central Railway (ECR) with an aim to not only provide cleanliness but basic amenities to passengers also.
ECR CPRO Arvind Rajak, while giving details about the mechanized cleaning work, said the cleaning work, apart from Patna Junction, has been launched at Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Dhanbad, Raxaul, Bettiah, Sitamarhi, Bapudham Motihari, Sugauli, Parasnath, Sakri and Jayanagar junctions. The agency will also ensure cleaning work at platforms, waiting rooms, lavatories and washable aprons on platform areas every day, he said and added that the contract for the work was finalized with a private agency at a cost of Rs 5.42 crore for two years for Patna Junction, which is one of the most crowded stations of the country.
According to sources, railways, apart from mechanized cleaning work, has also given a contract to a private agency to remove or collect garbage from 32 stations of the ECR including Patna Junction. Under the system, workers of the agency would be present at major stations to collect or remove garbage from the long distance trains when they reach stations. Railway staff have been asked to ensure that coaches are attended properly by cleaning workers of the agency failing which railways would ensure fine on the erring workers, sources said.
