Medha Servo plans Rs.800 crore Rail, Metro Coach Factory in Telangana

Telangana Government on Friday allotted 100-acre land for an upcoming rail and metro coach factory, proposed to be set up by Hyderabad-based Medha Servo Drives Private Limited, with an estimated investment of Rs.800 crores.

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad headquartered Medha Servo Drives, part of Rs 1,000 crore Medha group that supplies propulsion equipment to Indian Railways, has announced plans to set up a large rail and metro coach manufacturing facility at Kondakal near Hyderabad in Telangana, involving an investment of around Rs 800 crore.

Telangana has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Medha Servo on Friday evening for the rail and metro coach manufacturing facility, which could create direct and indirect employment opportunities to over 2,000 persons.

Though Telangana was promised a Rail Coach Factory within six months of its formation, in the AP State Reorganization Act 2014, it has never become a reality in spite of frequent appeals to the central government’s said Telangana’s industries minister KT Rama Rao, speaking at the MoU ceremony. “Today, we are happy to have found a partner who is ready to set up a Rail/Metro Coach Factory in Telangana. Our state is fast emerging as a manufacturing hub.” The Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation has allotted about 100 acres of land in favour of Medha Servo for the proposed coach factory.

“Though Telangana was promised a Rail Coach Factory within six months of its formation in the Andhra Pradesh State Reorganisation Act 2014, it has never become a reality in spite of frequent appeals to the central government,” he added.

Medha has also agreed to work with the Telangana Academy for Skill and Knowledge to train the required manpower for the upcoming factory.

Medha Servo Drives, incorporated in 1984, had diversified into Railways in 1990 and currently the Medha group has five companies with total employment strength of around 3,000 and a turnover of over Rs 1,000 crore, said a statement from the Telangana government.

Further, it said Medha has in-house R&D facilities and developed products that were otherwise supplied by multinationals like ABB, Alstom, Bombardier, Caterpillar, GE, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Siemens, Toshiba, etc. By supplying products designed and manufactured by Indian engineers meeting international standards, Medha has become a trusted partner of Indian Railways and the group has ambition to grow internationally for which it has recently opened first overseas sales office in Dallas, USA, said the statement.

Medha supplies propulsion equipment for diesel electric locomotives, electric locomotives, diesel electric multiple units (DEMUs), electric multiple units (EMUs) to Mumbai sub-urban and Metros like Kolkata Metro.

In Kolkata Metro project, Medha has handheld ICF (Integral Coach Factory, Chennai) for a new design of train and for car body manufacturing. Further, Medha is working with ICF to deliver a 160 kmph train design which will be the first trainset capable of running at 160 kmph in Indian Railways, the statement added.
