Surat (ST): The ground work for metro rail project is expected to begin in the city shortly, ending a wait of nine long years of the people of Surat. Metro-link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA), a special purpose vehicle (SPV) of Government of Gujarat and Government of India (GOI), would soon be carrying out a feasibility study and a detailed project report (DPR) on it in the city.
Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) sources said, “Once the feasibility report and DPR are prepared by MEGA team, they would be sent for clearance to the Union ministry of urban development.” Delhi Metro Rail Corporation would be the technical partner for the metro project in the city.
The National Urban Transport Policy had said in 2006 that every city having a population of 20 lakh should have metro rail as one of the means of mass transportation. Since then Kochi, Jaipur and Nagpur had made some progress on this regard, but Surat failed to come up with any concrete plans.
Municipal commissioner Milind Torwane said, “This is a capital intensive project and needs expertise and time for implementation.” Surat Metro rail project is likely to be funded by World Bank.
“Surat’s population will be around 80 lakh by 2022. Therefore, metro would be needed for mass transportation,” said Jatin Shah, city engineer, SMC.
“Metro project is going to be a vital mass transport service in Surat in future. We are positive about the project and have already made provision for initial ground work for it in our budget,” mayor Niranjan Janjmera said
