Mumbai: In a victory for residents of J B Nagar, Andheri, the MMRDA has recommended changing the name of the local Metro station from Chakala to Chakala (J B Nagar).
The Metro station is actually located about 1.5km from Chakala. But there is no hope for residents of Andheri West who similarly complain that the Metro Rail stations named D N Nagar and Versova are actually 1-3 km away from the actual location. D N Nagar is located at Indian Oil Junction while Versova is located at Seven Bungalows.
Locals had approached legislator Krishna Hegde who took up the matter. “I met MMRDA commissioner UPS Madan but due to computerized mapping routes, ticketing and various central government procedures, we could not change the name entirely. I then suggested that the station be called Chakala (J B Nagar) to tide over these issues,” Hegde said on Friday. MMRDA commissioner Madan has sent the alternative name to the Centre for approval. “The Chakala issue is being processed. It requires an amendment in the notification by the Union ministry of urban development. No corrections are required in case of other stations,” Madan said.
Meanwhile, officials of Reliance Metro (MMOPL) were in the dark about this development. A spokesperson said, “The naming of the station has been done as per the concession agreement. We have not received any communication from MMRDA regarding the change of name.
