Metro Rail ElectrificationMumbai: In an attempt to keep up with the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro project’s schedule, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has floated bids for installing electrical systems to operate the 32.5km-long underground corridor.

“Bids for the electrical systems had to be invited for it to be in place much before 2018-end for this Metro to be operational in phases,” said an MMRC official.

Therefore, private parties have been invited to design, supply, install, test and commission overhead system, substations and integrate with other systems — signaling, control room, car depot, etc.

The electrical system will have 25 KV alternating current traction system with a design to operate the Metro at an optimum speed of 95km/hour. Although, the design has higher speeds but the actual speed, once commissioned, won’t touch 95km/hour.

The bids will be submitted by February-end and later on evaluated. It will be awarded to the bidders only in March or thereafter.

In all, there will be 27 stations but not all of them will be commissioned by December 2018. The entire alignment of 33.5km is scheduled for completion only in April 2020. The entire corridor will be thrown open for public use in four phases. In the first phase, the route between Kanjurmarg and Seepz will be commissioned in December 2018, whereas Aarey/Seepz-Bandra-Kurla Complex is scheduled for June 2019, followed by the line up to Science Museum in December 2019, and eventually the entire line.

Last May, the MMRC had received bids to construct the entire line with a schedule to award works by 2015-end, but it has got delayed by a few months. Officials claimed that it won’t impact the larger schedule of the project worth Rs23,136 crore. During the evaluation of bids of civil construction, authorities have realised the increase in civil construction cost.
