MSEDCL files FIR against DRM/Mumbai for Power theft

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has filed an FIR against the divisional railway manager (DRM) and a senior section engineer (SSE) of the Central Railway for stealing electricity in Kalyan.

MSEDCL alleged that CR personnel living in the railway colony in Kalyan stole power from a local electricity pole, amounting to Rs 3.80 lakh. This was discovered after the MSEDCL vigilance department received a tip off in February and had conducted a surprise raid in the area.

The February 11 raid found that a common electricity pole supplying power for street lights in the area was being exploited by the railway officials for use by two of the buildings in the colony.

An MSEDCL official said, “We informed the railways about the power theft but we got no response. So we calculated the amount of money lost due to the theft and filed the FIR.”

However, the railway retaliated saying that some railway officials had complained to MSEDCL about the lack of power in the railway hospital.

Clearly irked by the FIR against two of their top-brass people, Ajay Solanki, divisional chairman of Central Railway Mazdoor Sangh said, “The MSEDCL is targeting the SSE and DRM. The railways had requested them to omit the DRM’s name from the complaint, but they did not listen.”

However, DRM/Mumbai Amitabh Ojha said that the railways were investigating the case to nail the culprits.

Bharat Pawar, spokeperson of MSEDCL, Kalyan, said, “Those found indulging in any kind of electricity or transformer theft will be booked under Section 135(1) of Electricity Act, 2003 as amended by Electricity (amendment) Act 2007.”
