The Manonmaniam Sundaranar University’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering has bagged a research project, worth Rs.12 lakh, for designing a system that would identify and analyse the obstructions on the railway track and alert the loco pilot to avert accidents.
The project, sanctioned by Science and Engineering Research Board, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, under the special scheme ‘Empowerment and equity opportunities for excellence in science’, has been awarded to D. Murugan, Principal Investigator of the project and Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, MSU.
The objective of the project is to reduce the number of accidents involving two trains or trains and other vehicles or pedestrians crossing the railway track.
The proposed system should identify the possible threat on the track and warn the loco pilot in advance.
“As per our proposal, an infrared-enabled long-range focusing video camera will be attached to the train engine and subsequently connected to the computer-enabled system with algorithm which will analyse the signal and warn the loco pilot about the obstruction on the railway track so that appropriate action can be taken on time to avert accidents,” said Dr.Murugan.
The project should be completed within two years.
