Visakhapatnam (VSKP): Preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Vizag Metro Rail will be taken up once the formal consent of the Metro Wing of the Union Urban Transport Ministry is obtained. The GVMC had sent an initial report, terms of reference, and request for proposal (RFP) to the Ministry, based on which a meeting was held in New Delhi on Monday.
Once an agency is approved, it will take up work based on the earlier traffic density studies made by i-Trans Private Limited. Working on a low carbon mobility plan, it has identified four routes based on the density of traffic.
“The agency approved for preparing the DPR will take up one of the four corridors, an intensive route in terms of traffic, for the DPR. It is expected that it will take about six months for preparation of the DPR,” Municipal Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana, who returned from New Delhi after a meeting with key urban transport officials, told reporters on Wednesday.
Once the intensive route is approved, in the second phase, 12 components such as height, land, signals, stations etc. on it will be worked out.
For the DPR, which costs Rs.1.8 crore, half the amount will be borne by the Central government and the remaining by the State government.
Mr. Satyanarayana said the funding prospects for the metro vastly improved after the Telangana Bill was passed by Parliament.
The 20-km metro rail proposed in the first phase is estimated to cost a whopping Rs.5,000 crore.
