Nagpur (NGP): Nagpur metro rail has again taken a lead over other metro projects in use of latest technologies. After deciding to use solar energy at inception stage, authorities of Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Limited (NMRCL) have decided to use the latest project management software system for executing the project. NMRCL has tied up with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Powai for consultancy.
NMRCL Managing Director Brijesh Dixit told that 5D Building Information Modeling (BIM) was used by construction companies in the developed countries for tighter control time, cost and quality. “We want to integrate all the project components even before the actual on-site execution begins. The broad objective is to adhere to timelines, focus on costs, timely execution as also maintain regular checks and balances,” he said.
Dixit further said the technique was discussed with IIT professors. “Deepak Phatak of department of computer science and engineering has agreed to provide us consultancy. It will include reviewing the bid document, assessment of the potential service providers, assistance in evaluation of the bids and conduct of negotiations and finalization of the contract for providing 5D BIM,” he said.
In India, only L&T has used this technology. “It was partly used for constructing the Terminal 3 of Delhi international airport in 2008. However, L&T did not use it after that. We have held talks with L&T officials. They have agreed in principle to provide 5D BIM at the earliest,” he said.
On the tender for appointment of general consultant, Dixit said that it was a long process. “We had held a meeting with DMRC four days ago. The draft is about 75% complete,” he added.
On other developments, Dixit said that meeting with German agency KfW would be held on June 24. “The work of digging pits for geotechnical survey in the Mihan-Airport stretch is over. Soil samples have been sent. Now, we will reach Zero Mile soon. Survey from Automotive Square end will start soon. Work on our office in Chinchbhuvan is also going ahead,” he said.
What is 5D BIM
5D BIM is a construction project management system in which the 3D computer automated designs (CAD) are linked with schedule (time) constraints and then with cost-related information. The creation of 5D models enables the various participants – architects, designers, contractors and owners – of a construction project to visualize the progress of construction activities and its related costs over time. This system has the potential to improve management and delivery of projects of any size or complexity.
