Narrow escape for passengers as Karwar-Bengaluru train derails

Two engines and one unreserved coach of train 16518/16524, Kannur/Karwar – Bengaluru Express, following the engine derailed between Shirivagilu and Yadakumari stations of Mangaluru – Hassan section in Mysore division, South Western Railway at 2.10am on June 15. No casualties or injuries have been reported. Consequent to this development, the train traffic in this section has been temporarily disrupted.

At 2.10 am on Monday, engine driver Shivakumar noticed the boulder from a distance and applied emergency brakes in the nick of time. This resulted in the engine hitting the boulder at a slower speed. Two engines of the train and one unreserved coach were derailed. Those on their way to Bengaluru were taken to Subramanya Road Station down the ghat in the train with the help of the back engine. The service of the Bengaluru–Kannur/Karwar Express, which left Bengaluru on Sunday, was partially cancelled between Sakleshpur and Kannur/Karwar. Buses have been arranged by South Western Railway, Hubballi, for moving passengers by road to Mangaluru/Karw

Accordingly, train services have been regulated as under: Train 16518 Kannur/Karwar – Bengaluru Express (derailed train) which left Mangaluru Central on June 14, has been taken back to Subrahmanya Road and is being diverted via Mangaluru Central, Kannur, Shoranur, Palakkad, Erode and Salem. This train has left Mangaluru Junction at 9.30am. Service of train 16515 Yeswantpur – Karwar express scheduled to leave Yeswantpur on June 15 has been cancelled.

Service of train 16517/16523 Bengaluru – Kannur/Karwar express, which left Bengaluru on June 14 has been partially cancelled between Sakleshpur and Kannur/Karwar on June 15. Buses have been arranged by South Western Railway, Hubballi for moving passengers by road to Mangaluru/Karwar.

Further to the disruption of train service caused due to the derailment of train 16518 Kannur/Karwar – Bengaluru express, the following train services have also been regulated: Service of train 16518/16524 Kannur – Bengaluru Express, scheduled to leave Kannur on June 15 has been partially cancelled between Kannur and Mangaluru Central. Service of train 16524 Karwar – Bengaluru Express, scheduled to leave Karwar on June 15 has been partially cancelled between Karwar and Mangaluru Central.

The service of train 16517/16523 Bengaluru – Karwar/Kannur Express, which left Bengaluru on June 14 has been partially cancelled between Sakleshpur and Kannur/Karwar on June 15. The service of train 16516 Karwar – Yeswantpur Express scheduled to leave Karwar on June 16, will be cancelled due to the cancellation of its pairing train service.
