New Delhi: The Ministry of Urban Development has favoured fast tracking of creating a subsidiary of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to provide general and technical consultancy to new and undergoing Metro projects across the country. A senior Union urban development ministry official said that they have recently issued a no objection certificate (NOC) to DMRC to go ahead with the plan.
DMRC has been providing consultancy to Metro projects such as the ones in Chennai, Kochi, Bangalore Amritsar and Jaipur. Since the body created with 50:50 partnership between Union Urban Development Ministry and Delhi Government has expertise in this sector – whether project preparation or consultancy – most of such works land up in the DMRC.
“The subsidiary company can be formed after Delhi government also issues NOC,” said a ministry official. The proposal gains importance considering the government’s announcement to push Metro rail projects in all cities that have more than two million population. “Once you have a company with specialized people, they can take up these fresh work while the DMRC can focus on its core activities of constructing Metro lines and operating them in Delhi.
Recently, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit had even opposed to DMRC taking works outside the national capital. She had said that the company has enough work yet to be completed in Delhi and that the agency should not be over-burdened.
Earlier, the ministry had proposed creation of 8,000-staff strong subsidiary of DMRC. The decision to form such an organization was also cleared by the DMRC board of directors. The subsidiary company may be named DMRC Consultancy Services.
“It is all likely that the new company to get the name of either “DMRC Urban Infrastructure Services Ltd” (or) DMRC International Ltd (DIL)“, sources said.
