Khairapalli Accident: Orissa HC rejects ECOR’s petition in seeking more time

Cuttack (CTC):  Orissa high court on Thursday rejected the petition filed by East coast railways authorities seeking time to comply with the court’s November 26, 2012 order. The HC last year ordered the East coast railways to pay a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to families of each of the 14 victims, who died after the vehicle in which they were travelling was hit by an express train at an unmanned level crossing at Khairapalli in Sambalpur district on August 24, 2012.

Along with the compensation, the court had also ordered the railways to convert all the unmanned level crossings across the state into manned ones to avoid such mishaps in future. But the East coast railways had filed a time petition seeking time from the court to comply with the order. Division bench of Chief Justice A.K Goel and Justice A.K Rath heard the matter and rejected it. The bench observed that it’s been one year after court made the order so no more time can be provided. However, the East coast railways have also filed a review petition in the high court.
