Secunderabad: The Railway Ministry has drawn up plans to interact with its major stake holders, customers and passenger associations so as to meet fresh challenges and succeed in its endeavour to balance its financial viability and fulfil social commitments, said Mohd. Jamshed, Member Traffic, Railway Board. He was addressing the two day All India Chief Commercial Managers Conference at Rail Nilayam, Secunderabad today i.e.27th May 2016. The Conference was attended by the Chief Commercial Managers of all the Zones on Indian Railways and Senior Officials from the Traffic wing of Indian Railways.
The need of the hour for the Railways is to get away from its traditional mode of thinking in context of the drastic change in the working environment. At a time when finances are coming in for Railways in a big way from the financial institution towards infrastructure development, it is imperative that Revenue has to be earned to manage the expenditure and clear loans, Jamshed stressed. The Railway Board is strategising various plans such as fare rationalisation, concessions in freight tariff, adopting policy changes etc., so as to ensure ease of business and serve the requirements of the customers. He expressed his view that the Railway officials, with their domain expertise are capable of leading the Indian Railways on to the growth path. The Member Traffic also stressed on the potential to tap parcel business, advertisement revenue etc. to add to the Railways coffers.
Earlier, Ravindra Gupta, General Manager, SCR in his address said that the Commercial wing of Railways is the only department which earns revenue for the Railways, since all the other departments basically handle the expenditure part. He detailed on the many initiatives taken on the zone to enhance its freight business and opined that the competition is very tough from the Road sector to overcome. The General Manager emphasised that the advent of IT enabled communication will substantially enhance passenger satisfaction in the front line areas such as Un-reserved and Reserved Ticketing, Ticket Checking, Parcel Management and Catering services.
S.C.Jethi, Addl Member Commercial, Railway Board also spoke on the occasion. The Chief Commercial Managers of all the Zones presented their performance reports.
