PDP President and MP Mehbooba Mufti calls on Railway Minister to discuss various rail connectivity issues of J&K

Srinagar: Union Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu today assured Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President and MP Mehbooba Mufti that a team of senior officers from the Railway Ministry will visit J&K for on-the-spot assessment soon. Mehbooba had requested extension of rail link up to Kupwara, Sonamarg and Pahalgam areas in Kashmir and Rajouri, Poonch and Chenab Valley in the Jammu region. Once he gets a report from the official committee, the Railways Minister will also visit the state.Mehbooba, accompanied by PDP MPs Nazir Ahmad Laway and Fayaz Ahmad Mir, called on Prabhu in New Deli today to discuss various issues pertaining to rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, the PDP said in a statement.During the meeting, Mehbooba sought personal intervention of the Union Railway Minister to expedite work on the rail link between Banihal and Udhampur. “The real potential of the project to provide rail connectivity to Kashmir would be realised only when this crucial segment is through,” the statement quoted Mehbooba.She also requested for setting up new stations on the existing track between Banihal and Baramulla.She asked the Railways Minister to intervene and revive the practice of running additional trains between Jammu and rest of the country to boost tourism in Kashmir. Also, Mehbooba called for arranging joyrides for tourists between Banihal and Baramulla so that they can explore J&K’s countryside.“The Railway Minister assured Mehbooba that a team of senior officers from the Ministry will be visiting J&K soon for on-the-spot assessment of the issues pertaining to the railways in the state,” the statement said.
