Pollachi: Handling of goods commenced at the Pollachi Goods Shed on Monday after more than eight years. The traffic on the Pollachi – Palakkad and Pollachi – Palani sections were closed for conversion from metre gauge to broad gauge.
Only recently, the Pollachi Railway Junction was thrown open and train services commenced on the Pollachi – Palakkad section and a little earlier train services on the Pollachi – Palani section commenced on completion of gauge conversion. The gauge conversion works on the Pollachi – Podanur (Coimbatore) section is expected to be completed by next year.
The first consignment of 2,652 tonnes of soya bean in 42 wagon goods rake arrived from Badnera, Maharashtra at the Junction station goods yard.
The consignment was booked by M/s.Sakthi Sugars, Soya Division, Pollachi. The goods train that left Maharashtra on Friday, arrived at Pollachi by Sunday night.
Unloading of the goods started at 6 a.m. and was completed by 3 p.m. The goods shed was active until 2006 in metre gauge era. The new goods shed was constructed at Pollachi Junction as part of gauge conversion in Palakkad Town / Podanur – Pollachi section.
The 650-metre-long and 20-metre-wide goods platform at the shed has a full rake capacity of 42 wagons. The goods platform, goods shed office, freight operations information system-enabled goods booking facility, waiting room for traders, rest rooms for staff and approach road were completed at a cost Rs. 6 crore.
