PPP model projects may not be successful, says MOSR-II

The implementation of railway projects on private public participation (PPP) model will not mostly be successful taking into consideration our earlier experiences, said Union Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

“The gestation period of Railway projects is too long. Since a lot of procedures are involved in the execution of projects, private agencies are not interested in taking up the work,” the minister said.

The Railways currently has financial constraints, which is affecting its efforts to improve the facilities of passengers, the minister said.

“The passengers are coming up with more demands. Despite running 12,000 passenger trains in the country, they are seeking to increase the frequency of the trains and other services,” the minister said.

The minister added that the Railway Ministry has identified 347 projects to be implemented as part of the Five Year Plan.
