Though the foundation stone for the project was laid in 1996 when Janata Dal-Secular supremo HD Deve Gowda from the state was the Prime Minister of a coalition government, construction began only in 2000 under the BJP-led NDA government and the railways took 16 years to complete it.

“The new track provides direct rail connectivity from Bengaluru to Bidar, 690km away from the state capital, and enable running more long-distance passenger and freight trains on the route,” a senior railway official told.

The New Railway line between Bidar – Gulbarga (Kalaburagi), which criss crosses the Bidar and Kalaburagi Districts, has brought a vast extent of the region on to the Railway Map for the first time, opening up new vistas of economic, industrial and agricultural growth. The project, funded jointly by Railways and the Karnataka State Government on 50:50 basis, extends to a length of 110.40 Kms, and has been completed at a cost of Rs.1542 Crs. Work was taken up in the Ist Phase between Khanapur – Humnabad for a length of 37.20 kms while in the IInd Phase, the balance portion between Humnabad – Kalaburagi (Gulbarga) was completed to a length of 73.19 kms. 12 New Railway Stations have come up enroute. To begin with, two pairs of Passenger Services will be running in the section.

The new Bidar – Kalaburagi (Gulbarga) rail line is going to offer a very convenient and faster transport access from Bidar/Gulbarga (Kalaburagi) to various cities. The distance from Bidar to Bengaluru will be reduced by 52 kms, from Bidar to Mumbai by 115 kms, since the trains can run directly towards Kalaburagi and further. The distance towards North of India will also get reduced, while the new route will also act as an alternative rail route access from Kalaburagi towards Hyderabad too.

The New Railway line between Bidar – Gulbarga (Kalaburagi) a length of 110.40 Kms, was completed in two Phases at an approximate expenditure of Rs.1542 Crs. In the first phase, work was taken up between Khanapur – Humnabad to a length of  37.207 Kms. Later on, the  second Phase work was taken up between Humnabad – Kamalapur – Gulbarga (Kalaburagi) to a length of 73.193 Kms, which has been completed as per the scheduled target in October 2017. The new line will have 12 new railway stations enroute Kanaji(H), Hallikhed-B, Nandagaon(H), Humnabad, Kallur Road(H), Hallikhed-K, Margutti(H), Kamalapur, Nawadgi(H), Mahagaon(H),  Kurukotta(H) and Sultanpur.

The new rail line offers a very convenient and faster transport access from Bidar/Gulbarga (Kalaburagi) to the metropolitan cities of Bengaluru, Mumbai, etc., since it connects the existing rail routes of Wadi – Bengaluru/Mumbai and Vikarabad – Parli Vaijnath. The new rail line will help boost the agri market economy of the region, offering opportunity for transport of pulses, sugar cane, dairy products etc and will provide a push for industrial development of the area. The new rail line also serves as an alternate route bypassing Wadi junction, thereby offering scope for running of more rail services in the region.
